Sala Montjuic Open-Air Cinema in Barcelona is a perfect night out for film buffs

If you will be in Barcelona in June or July and looking for somewhere interesting to go in the evening, you must not miss a visit to the Sala Montjuic Open-Air Cinema.

It is only open from the 30th of June to the 7th of August this year, but during that time you can see some wonderful movies (in their original language with Spanish subtitles).

The Sala Montjuic Open-Air Cinema takes place within the walls of Montjuic Castle in Barcelona four evenings a week. There is always live music from local groups or singers before the movie starts and, if you want to make an entire evening of it, you can take a picnic with you and eat on the grass, just like the locals do.

Movies at Sala Montjuic in 2013

Doors open at 8:30pm with the film screening starting at 10pm. Films are shown every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, with films this year including West Side Story, The Untouchables, Melancholia, The Guard, We Have a Pope, Moonrise Kingdom, Citizen Kane and Monsieur Lazhar.

One of the most popular nights at the Sala Montjuic is the Surprise Movie on the last night — the 7th August — when you have no idea what movie you’ll be seeing. Book early for tickets for this one, however, as they go fast.

You can find out more about Sala Montjuic, the movies and the live music at the Sala Montjuic website, as well as book tickets for each film.
