Bad news for the Spanish squad for the European football championship, Euro 2012 today. Barcelona striker, David Villa, one of the best football players in Spain, said today he won’t recover in time for Euro 2012. Villa hasn’t played football since he broke his leg in December, 2011 while playing in the Club World Cup with Barca and, today, announced no matter how hard he has tried he’s just not in full fighting shape for a competition so strenuous.

On Twitter today, David Villa said “I tried right to the end but I wasn’t able to get to 100 percent for the Euros.”

Villa has scored 51 goals in 82 national team appearances for Spain. His past performances brought the Spanish team to victory at Euro 2008 and in the World Cup finals in 2010. He’s also currently Spain’s all-time top goalscorer , with more national and international goals than anyone else. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to add more to his record at Euro 2012.

Meanwhile, Spain’s coach Vicente Del Bosque has set May 27 as his deadline for deciding his final 23-man squad. At that time, we’ll all learn who any Barca or Bilbao players on the team are too, now that Villa won’t be one of them.

Spain are in Group C for the finals.
